History of Suffolk
Suffolk was first settled by English colonists in the year 1742. At this time, the small community was known as Constant's Warehouse named after an early settler by the name of John Constant. Its name was changed to Suffolk a few years later in reference to its governor's home town.
During its early years, Suffolk relied mainly on tobacco and a variety of other crops. However, when the railroad reached Suffolk after the Civil War, other types of businesses began to flourish. Nevertheless, peanut farming remained a major industry throughout
Suffolk's history even to this day.
