History
In 1752, on 65 acres of land on the banks of the Elizabeth River, Colonel William Crawford, a wealthy merchant, planned a town for the ages.
The town of
Portsmouth was named after the historic English naval port, and to date many of the streets also reflect this English heritage. As one of America’s most historic naval seaports, Portsmouth includes both the oldest operating US Naval Hospital and the first operational dry dock facility in the US, the Gosport Shipyard.
In the past 250 years, the City has grew to its present size of approximately 33 square miles in land. Today despite the City’s growth in size its unique history continues to shine through.
